how do you know when to replace the water pump and fan clutch?

The fan clutch will normally set a trouble code when it goes bad. Sometimes it might just get really loud. The water pump will get noisey,loose, or leak coolant. You can do a quick check by grabbing the fan blade and see if it moves up and down. If so, the water pump is bad.
