There is a whinning noise coming from the engine had the alternater and checked the belt. just wondering what else it could be

Need to eliminate the accessories. Try removing the belt and starting it to see if the noise goes away

The idler pulley is the usual culprit. It will sound like the alternator. If you remove the belt and spin the idler pulley, you will be able to tell.
