My '99 Tahoe got locked in 4WD Auto, push button illuminated, it would not go back into 2WD. I didn't have time to have it checked out, drove it too long, and the front end locked up on me at about 35 MPH. I heard a loud thud and heard the gears in the front end grind up. The truck will move forward slowly with the metal teeth grinding but it will not go anywhere in Reverse.
Is it possible to disconnect the front 4WD and run it in 2WD? If not, should I replace the whole front drive system with a used one? Do you think there is transmission damage also?
