My Tahoe makes a loud vibrating sound at cold start up, that worsens when put in reverse. This sound doesn't occur every time I start it, but when it does occur it is always the first start up of the day. The sound that I hear stops after approximately 20-30 seconds and doesn't re-occur unless it has set long enough to have completely cooled down.

The sound is difficult to describe. Very loud. Sounds like something is vibrating to the point flying apart!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The noise may be as hard to describe, as it is to suggest a repair, but I will give you some possibilities. Is the exhaust system the factory system, or has it been upgraded? Is it possibly grounding out somewhere, and engaging reverse applies more to the grounding. It is possible as well to have possibly a cracked flexplate, and sometimes forces on the torque converter will make a change. In most cases the torque converter pushes forward in drive, I am not sure what it does in reverse but if it pulls back it maybe influencing the noise. If the noise is loudest under the hood, remove the belt and see what happens. Keep in mind that it has a seperate belt for the A/C compressor, and it could be another possibility. Usually though, the compressor does not engage right at startup.
