if we let the fuel go down to a quarter tank, the engine will not start. If I add two to three gallons of gas, it starts and runs great. When I get to the gas station, I can only add about twenty gallons (26 gallon tank). It will then run great unless we let it get back down to that level. Now we just make sure we keep at least half a tank of gas.
We have always been able to run down to empty and the idiot light would come on, but cannot remember last time we did it. Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Have the fuel pressure tested. It should be no less that 55 PSI. If it is less then you have a failing fuel pump.
