There is a growling sound that comes from underneath the truck. It happens "randomly" and seems to happen more since its been cold out. I had the drive shaft checked and CVs checked and they are fine. At first I thought it was a grinding bearing in the wheel - after replacing it I discovered that this was not the case.

The growling sound seems to growl at a certain point in a rotation - so the frequency of it is the same as the speed i'm going.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the brakes? Also, can you tell me aprox where the sound is coming from, front, mid, rear...?

Let me know.

I took it to a differential guy.

There was a real light noise, like a soft rubbing noise. The guy didn't hear the heavy growl that would happen occasionally.

He thought the light noise was the front dif. bearings. (Which is was).

But once he opened up the dif., he found that the pinion was shot as well. and there a few teeth missing from the gear (The heavy grinding/growling noise).

thanks
