Shakes or Wobbles problem
1997 Chevy Tahoe V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 135k miles

I replaced my engine with a long block crate motor at about 101K. At about 128K I had all brakes and front end sway bar links/joints done. Everything else is original as far as I know. I bought it at 97K. A couple weeks ago I started noticing loud pings and popping sounds during acceleration and breaking. The sounds are repetitive and occurrence seems to increase as speed increases. Now the clanging or pinging remains during acceleration, but a vibration has become noticeable. I haven't pinned down a speed range except that the higher the speed, the more apparent the vibration is... increases with speed. The sounds are only present while in gear. I have put the transmission in neutral at speed and downhill and no vibration or noise is apparent. It sounds expensive. Any ideas?

While in park i tried to shake and twist the drive shaft to check for play, but it seemed to be tight. What else would I be looking for? U-joints would make sence. The sounds seem to be coming from the rear.

If you checked it in park, chances are there was a lot of tension on the drive shaft resulting in it feeling tight. You need to apply the park brake (securly so the vehicle can't move) and place it on neutral so there is no tension on the drive shaft.
