Fuel gauge bouncing around.

Hello,
I have a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban3/4 ton K2500 4x4 7.4L with about 78,000 miles. I'm having issues with the fuel gauge bouncing around and I would like to get it fixed but the last few mechanics I've spoken to told me it would cost me a few hundred dollars just to find out what's going on with it and I really can't afford that along with the repairs. If you have any ideas on what I should be looking at first, I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much, PrettyInPink

Got a 91 3/4 ton 2wd that does the same thing.
Fine at all places except between 3/4 and 5/8 tank levels where it bounces around erratticaly but works fine everywhere else.
I was told that the rheostat that is attached to the float probably has a bad area. Short of plling the assembly and replacing it (which usually involves dropping the tank, unless you cut a hole in the floor)

ive learned to live with the problem.

Or as in my case the gauge cluster is bad the mechanic told me he disconnected the fuel pump and my fuel gauge still pegs past full, although for know it returns to the correct fuel level. Get in line and prepare to shell out at least 500 bucks to replace the gauge cluster because as with all GM products you have to buy stuff attached to other stuff you do not need. I have purchased my last GM product I am going to Toyota!
