I have a 2004 Chevy Suburban with 48000 miles and today while driving it started making a fluttering/grinding noise from below and then would no longer go. I pressed on the gas and the engine reved up but it would not go into gear. I stopped on the side of the road and popped the hood with the engine still running. No sounds, burning smell, nothing. I laid down underneath it and no fluid or burning smells were coming from it. I shifted through all the gears, but still nothing. I turned the vehicle off and then restarted it. I put it into drive and it started to go. I gave it gas, but eventually after about 200 ft. It fell out of gear again and would no longer go forward.

Most likely hard parts in trans let go. If doing yourself drop pan see what is in pan ie. Metal, clutch material. Does fluid smell burnt when you checked fluid level?

Had it towed to the shop today and they said the pump went out and that it needed to be re-built. The tech said that there were no recalls on it but that GM had five pages of technical service updates on it. I wonder if I have any recourse w/ GM. Only has 48,000 miles on it.

I would sure give it a try contact area service rep. They can authorize repairs don't waste time with dealer. Also contact GM resolution center. I agree 48k is way to soon for trns to have that kind of failuire.
Good Luck
