My suburban's transmission shifts normal around town all day long. After driving on the highway the transmission will shift hard between gears when pulling off from a stop position. If we stop and shut the vehicle off for a sort time and then resume all is OK for a while until sppeds get above 50-60 miles per hour the problem returns.

I have similar issues with my 2000/2500 suburban. I hear that it may be a shift sensor or shift selinoid. Have you had your issues diagnosed?
