how often does a torque converter need to be replaced and what causes them to go out and whats the average price on one?

The torque convertor never needs to be replaced unless it fails or if there is a major internal transmission failure. Any number of things can cause one to go out. They can vary in price depending on where you buy one at, probably $200ish aftermarket. The transmission needs to be taken out to replace the convertor so labor will cost more than the part most likely.
