What is the possible cause of the 4 wheel drive not engaging? It's an electronicly controlled system. When I push the All Wheel drive button, the light comes on but the 4x4 doesn't engage. If I press 4x4 HI I get an idiot light that says Service 4 Wheel Drive System. Of course, 4x4 Low won't engage either. Any ideas on what the repair cost might be?

It is most likely the actuator motor on the transfer case or the axles. However, it could be as simple as a switch or a loose ground.
Actuator motors are somewhat easy to replace but the part costs around $300 plus labor.
