1997 Chevy Suburban Cruise control module - Suburban K1500

My cruise control is not working. My mechanic had the vehicle for a day to diagnose it and is telling me my cruise control module might be bad. These parts are very high priced ($500) to just assume they need to be replaced. Is there a way to test my module (perhaps out of circuit) before I invest in a new part?
