89 350 runs and idles great, but I have to use starting fluid or I have to pump the pedal 20 or more times.

Could you narrow down the truck a little? 89 should be a TBI 350, if so pumping the throttle does nothing but get you exercise. Sounds like the fuel pump or the pulse dampener on the pump. Has it ever had a new fuel pump? The pulse dampener goes inline on the pump, they rupture the diaphrams and bleed down and give insufficient fuel pressure, causing poor idle quality and excessive cranking to start

I had the pump replaced last Aug. It idle's and runs smooth. It's a 89 4x4 350TBI.
