The other day I was driving the truck and heard a slight "ping" sound and immediately the truck hesitated. Within 15 minutes it hesitated again. I stopped the truck ran an errand and upon starting the truck again I looked in the rearview mirror and black/brown smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. I backed the truck up, shut it off and started it again and the smoke began to subside...eventurally stopping completely...what may have cause this problem? Should I be concerned that it will happen again?

That's some crazy stuff. Did the check engine light ever come on?

No, no engine light, no warning, just the "ping", the hesitation and the billowing black/brown smoke.

Be sure and check the oil level. It sounds like a ton of unburnt fuel. Do you drive in town all the time?

Not always, it gets some highway on a regular basis, actually, I'd say more highway than in town driving.
