The other day I was driving the truck and heard a slight "ping" sound and immediately the truck hesitated. Within 15 minutes it hesitated again. I stopped the truck ran an errand and upon starting the truck again I looked in the rearview mirror and black/brown smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. I backed the truck up, shut it off and started it again and the smoke began to subside. Eventurally stopping completely. What may have cause this problem? Should I be concerned that it will happen again?

No, no engine light, no warning, just the "ping", the hesitation and the billowing black/brown smoke.

Be sure and check the oil level. It sounds like a ton of unburnt fuel. Do you drive in town all the time?

Not always, it gets some highway on a regular basis, actually, I'd say more highway than in town driving.
