My truck will not go into 3 rd gear and the light reads transmission hot. Can only go 40mph.

I'm not a tranny expert. Checked the tranny fluid level lately? Ever changed the fluid and filter? How has this vehicle been used? Hint: If you have driven this truck in an abusive manner often and never maintained it, you are due for a big repair bill.
