2005 Chevy Silverado heater goes hot and cold

Lately my heater goes from hot to cold. It will stay hot only if the RPMs stay high. Also notived my temp gauge moving alot. Any ideas why or how to fix?

Check coolant level, may be some trapped air, check themostat. If coolant is over 2 years old, do a flush and fill, plus thermostat.
