how much would it cost to get 1st and reverse gear replaced and would it just be cheaper to get a new transmission?

Well you would not just do 1 & rev a rebuild is needed. @$ 2500
May get a Jasper for a good price a GMC @$ 3500+
Check around for a local trans shop get some prices and there is the Bone Yard.
