My husband's truck was running rough and the check engine light came on. While waiting for our appointment to have it looked at, he added fuel treatment and it ran fine afterward. Went to start it the next day and it would not start. Had it towed to the car care center and was told it needed a tune-up. After replacing the parts, the mechanic went to start the truck and it backfired- blowing two gaskets. They're replacing the gaskets but if it does it again we have to take it to a Chevy dealership. (My husband is in the Army and we are stationed in Germany. The currency exchange rate alone will kill us.) Any advice on what may have caused the backfire or where we go from here? Is the fuel maybe too rich now because of the additive? PLEASE help! :)

First be sure they have the plug wires on the correct places on the cap (can cause backfire). What was the exact code # in the computer (check engine light). Need to verify good fuel pressure and good spark first. Those had problems with injectors and fuel pressure regulators going bad, the fuel pumps didnt last too long either.

Hi there,

A back fire in the inlet system will be caused by cross firing ignition leads, sticky in let valve, timing problems, normally a tune will fix these problems, also have a scan done to check for any unresolved fault codes, start here.

The main problems I see on these are faulty distributors. They get corrosion inside them, and it will cause crossfire. The drive gear on the distributor is also a weak point.
The other common weak point is the crank sensor. A faulty crank sensor can cause backfire and poor performance.
