2003 Chevy Silverado battery gauge

I just noticed that the battery gauge is well above the 19 in the right side, red zone. what can cause this

The voltage regulator isn't working. This can cause problems to many of the electrical components on the vehicle, even fire. Have the alt checked and replaced if needed.
