That is good advice. Remove the power to the alt but keep in mind, with the battery connected, the power to the alt is hot. One other thing about the alternator are the diodes in it. They are designed to allow power to travel in one direction only. If you have a bad one, it will short to ground and drain the battery. The alternator will still charge when the engine is running, but drain the battery when off.

Well one night there was a wreck on my road. I went up there to help, stoped turned my hazard lights on and the botton shot out. When I got back home the button would not stay down but the lights were still flashing so I pushed a little harder and the horn honked as the lights were flashing. The horn stoped and I stoped messing with it. So I took the fuse out so the hazards would stop flashing. The next moring I tried to start it the battery was dead. So I put the fuse in, the hazzards didnt work so I charged the battery got it checked it was fine. Then the blinkers didnt work and now everytime I turn the truck off about 5 or 6 hours later the battery is dead. PLEASE help me.

What you got is a direct short to ground within the electrical system maybe and could involve the hazard circuit. Get a test light -disconnect the negative cable on the battery put test light between the disconnected cable and battery negative post-the test light will lit if you have a short in the system that's eating up the battery.

To find it start removing fuses one by one till the light turns off-this is where the trouble is located.

Hello, We are sorry you are having troubles. Let me see if I can help you out.

If your battery is going from a full charge to dead over night it could be a couple of things.

1: Your battery has reached its life span and will no longer hold a charge. In which case you will need to replace it. Many part stores cant test your battery to see if it is good for free. Check with your local auto parts dealers to see who will do this for you at no charge. You can just walk in with the battery. You do not need to bring the car.

2: You have a draw on the battery that is draining it. Here is a link to show you how to test your system for a draw should the battery turn out to be fine:

If you need more help or have more questions with this issue please feel free to come back and ask. And if this resolves your issue please let us know. Have a great day! Rich.

Good morning.

Did you check the charging system?

If it is overcharging, it will boil a battery and fail the battery. Use a voltmeter and see if the charge rate is 14 to 14.5 volts.

Did you also check for a draw?

Roy

A battery drain with everything turned off? The best time to check for a lite staying on, is in the dark, under the hood, in the cab, somewhere. You can take battery cable loose, use testlite between cable and battery posts. If the lite is on, pull fuses one at a time. When you pull the fuse on the faulty circuit, the lite goes out. If you have a lite under the hood, you have to account for that and keep the doors shut.

My pickup battery dies consistently after about 3 or 4 days of not running it. I've replaced the alternator and battery; also had them both tested and RE-tested. Pass with flying colors. Nothing is being left on in the truck. I've checked all lights including the courtesy lamps under the hood. My A/C hasn't been run in quite a while due to an issue with the "flap" that diverts air to the specified vents. When I shut off the truck or start it, it pops five or six clicks then stops and does it again for about 8 cycles. I cannot for the life of me find out why. I've pulled fuses one by one and found that with the vehicle off, the courtesy fuse arcs. This is the only one that does it. Also my amp gauge bobbles when the turn signal is used even at 70mph. Any ideas how to make this truck more reliable?

I would install a battery shut off on negative cable, when you turn it, it will cut battery power to engine.

This will erase clock settings and radio presets, but it will tell you if there is a battery drain.

Some autoparts stores have a device that will measure drains on battery when engine is off.

But drains are hard to isolate without proper equipment.

Also check relays with engine off, after engine cools, quickly touch relays, if any are hot, then relay is stuck.

Battery drains slowly when vehicle is parked for a period of time. Also, gauge shows charging at 14 amps when first driving but at later will only show a charge of 12 amps after driving for a while. Can you help in what I should be checking?

I need you to check two things. First, we need to check if the alternator is working when it reads 12 volts. The 14 you mentioned sounds normal. If it drops to 12, the alt may be going bad. When it is reading 12 volts, run this test:

https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_test_alternator.htm

After that is complete, I need you to check for an electrical draw. Here are the directions for that:

https://www.2carpros.com/first_things/why_is_my_car_battery_dead_over_night.htm

Let me know the outcome of both so I can point you in the right direction. If there is a draw, remove one fuse at a time to see what circuit is causing it. The draw should stop when you hit the right circuit.

Joe

I just purchased this truck and it completely drains the battery within a day. I just bought a new battery and it was drained so I took it to the local store to get it charged. I measured it to be 11.6 volts. As soon as I plugged in the terminals it read 5.4 volts. I disconnected the terminals and measured the battery again and it was at 8.4 volts. I have made sure all lights are off, removed the stereo and still nothing.

Hello,

This definitely sounds like your vehicle has a parasitic draw issue. Parasitic draw is an industry term. We use it when, just like in your case, a vehicle has some kind of electrical draw that will drain a vehicle's battery, even when the vehicle is shut off.
I have included a link to a guide for you down below.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-battery-dead-overnight

Please go through this guide and get back to us with what you find out. And make sure you have got a really good charge on your vehicle's battery before you start please. It will make things alot easier.

Thanks,
Alex

Battery goes down couple days. Battery cks o k. Alternator checks ok. Took positive cable loose from battery and measure resistance to ground get almost half meter reading, but open door or raised hood to when lights ( if connected ) would come on I get "0" resistance, which shows the positive cable is grounded.
Should there be any restistance any time cable unhook and where do I go to from here? What is causing the problem?
PS I cannot find any bare wires.
Thanks Dan
