2002 Chevy Silverado chevy truck won't shift

i have a 2002 chevy 1500 auto that will not shift. when i press the brake it comes out of park but the gear shifter just goes up and down without clicking into gear?? I checked the shifter cable and didnt see anything wrong..PLEASE HELP!!!!

Have an assistant make sure the shift lever on the transmission moves when the shifter is moved. You could have a cable broken inside the liner.
