2001 Chevy Silverado Fuel Gauge

My fuel gauge randomly falls to empy and returns to the appropraite level for no reason.

The dealer says I need to replace the fuel sensor for a total cost of $500.00

Does this sound like a correct diagnosis? And priced right?

They are correct, I've done lots of these. To save some money you can buy just the fuel level sensor. Thats what normally goes bad.

$500 for a fuel level sensor installed ! YOU ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF.

Buy the part yourself for about $110.00 plus tax and pay the labor only.
