Noises problem
2000 Chevy Silverado V8 Four Wheel Drive Manual

Does anyone know if the rear axle would be making any kind of noise if the differential carrier was messed, or would the noise be because the backspacing is off? I am asking because I have rebuilt my rear axle and everything is new except for the differential carrier and everything is set correctly including the pre load and backspacing or atleast im pretty sure it is. And the truck is drivable so I am just curious about it.

If everything but the carrier was replaced and the rear end is noisey, something was not set correctly. You will need to measure and adjust everything according to the service manual. Make sure you are using the proper tools also.

Yea everything is reset back to what the repair manual says to have it set at it just makes like a whinning sounds almost like its a rotational problem. The last time I had that checked a tech and the chevy dealership said that that was because of the backspacing.

If it has excessive or too little backlash, it's not set up correctly. I usually set the backlash to about.005in. This prevents a gear whine condition.
