2000 Chevy Silverado fuel pump testing

I have the plenum off the engine so I could access the fuel pressure regulator. I see it but how can I remove the module to check it. It is buried between the fire wall and engine and is impossible to work one .
I tried to run the fuel pump first by putting power to the it via the relay socket but it wont run. It ran before I took the plenum off.

The regulator is on the fuel rail, left side. I'm not sure what you are looking at in your picture. Here is a picture of the regulator. It is checked with the engine running.

I did not mention that the engine is Vortex 7.4L V8. The FPR is at the back of the engine to the left at the beginning of the rail. A very tight space. It has a vacuum hose connected to the intake manifold and and a removable metal return line that can be accessed but no visible removable connection to the rail.
It's hard to believe that the GM engineers would locate an external replaceable part in such an inaccessible area (also the oil pressure sensor and the distributor) of the engine when installed.

I hate to say it, but I never had to do it on a 7.4L. Is it possible to put a T after the fuel filter?
