How can I tell if the fuel pump or the pressure regulator is bad without having to change out both units

On your intake on the fuel rail is your pressure regulator. Disconnect the vacuum hose and check to see if there is any fuel in the line. That is a good indication that the regulator is leaking and needs to be replaces. Fuel pump you can check for fuel pressure. It should be around 60 psi when the key is turned on, and running should be around 53-61 psi. Is there a problem and what is it?

Check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge designed for your fuel system. Do the test with and w/o the pressure regulator-
