2000 Chevy Silverado Front cv or half axle replacement

Do I have to pull the bearing hub off to take off the axle. Can't i disconnect it from the differential and just take off the axle nut and pull it in to change the axle. The boots on the left axle are deformed.

everybody and their uncle have tried to snake it out without disconnecting the lower ball joint but unfortunately you have to disconnect the lower ball joint and remove the lower shock bolt too.
