2000 Chevy Silverado 4 wheel drive

I just purchased this truck and the four wheel drive service light just came on. Does anyone know what that means and what would cause it. Any ideas what this could be

From my experience this usually indicates that the encoder motor on the side of the transfer case is bad. You will need to have the tcm(transfercase control module)scanned and determine what code you have then go from there. Hope this helps

First you need to have it checked for sure. It is expensive, dealer list price is about$600 for the part and approx 1-2 hours labor, including diagnostic time.

In my experience most of the time for this concern on this year of vehicle is the transfer case switch on the dash. They are common for failing.
