My catalytic converter needs replacing. What causes the catalytic converter exterior to become dark?

cat. converters rarely fail and the exhaust piping and converter will become dark due to the amount of heat it undergoes..that does not mean it needs replaced. the oxygen sensors should be replaced before repacing cat. coverter.
