the blower motor squeaks when the fan is set on lower speeds. is that the motor itself or is it the squirrel cage? is it possible to spray it with anything that might help, instead of replacing?

Try lubricating the bearings where the shaft sticks out the side and attaches to the squirrel cages. Also make sure wiring is all good and tightened. If it's original blower motor may just want to replace it, they are not made to last forever and a '97 has definitely got some useage on it I'm sure..
