I recently installed a used 700r4 in my 1990 silverado. This transmission had a torque converter, but it was in pretty sad shape. I used the the new torque converter that was in my truck, and worked with the other trans. The problem is when I test drove my truck it acts as if it is a manual trans, ie: it dies when you put it in gear, and it doesn't matter which gear it is in. I suspect that it is a converter clutch apply valve problem, but I'm not sure. I also checked the converter clutch apply valve solenoid for continuity and it was fine. I replaced the other trans because it lost reverse.

Can you hookup to a scan unit to see if the computer is calling for convertor lockup? Also, try starting the vehicle in park, then disconnect the electrical connector from the trans. and then put it in drive. If it kills the engine it's either a valving problem in the trans or a bad convertor. I would do the scan unit test first.
