This is actually a quite common problem with GM products since 99 and it's caused by inferior step motors in the guages. I have an 04 Silverado 3500 that suffered the same problem. The dealer wanted $300 to RR with the unit rebuilt. I found a site on e-bay for a guy in Connecticut who has done over 4K repairs. His fee starts at $105 but I did the $170 plus postage and I had all the motors replaced and back in 5 days to Washington State. Here's his site and he does what he says. The auction has expired but I called him and he just told me to go ahead and ignore it and fill it out. Takes about 10 minutes to remove the cluster and you need a 7mm socket for 4 screws. After you get it back and if you've driven it or turned the key on with the unit removed, you will get a check engine light and it will go off after about 35 miles or 12 key cycles start/off.

Just ask them if they use updated step motors or the same crappy ones they've been using for years. The problem will probably come back at a later date if they repair using the older ones. I have found out that most outside repair shops use updated motors. Letting them fix it under warranty is the easy way as far as an inconvenience but the local dealer does it in one day. In in the morning, out in the afternoon. Good Luck.

OK, what they have done is just order the same defective unit under warranty. You may or may not have the same problem in the future as GM has not corrrected it. Make a file in your documents section, call it whatever you want and put the links I sent you in them so if you have another problem down the road, you'll have a ready reference back to them. I just gave my truck a pet name and any stuff about Silverado trucks that might pertain to mine, I put em in that file.
