If the check engine light is on, there is a code set in the computer. Take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. Most will do it for free, so there is no money out of pocket. It should identify where the problem is coming from.
NOTE: Also, check for vacuum leaks.
