2001 Chevy S-10 4 cyl Automatic 84000 miles

We were looking on the drivers side, inside the dash, under the speaker, furthest from the interior of the car close to the engine area and found a medium size round, black object and we are not sure what it could be? I am sure that it has some function, but we really need to know what?
thank you for your time.

Ok if I am understanding correctly what you are looking at is a vacuum resivior. It holds a reserve of vacuum for the 4x4 system. It should be black and round and have a mount on it where two bolts hold it down and a vacuum line coming to it and going from it.

It could be for your heater to change the doors to vent, defrost, floor and etc. If you send me a pic I can verify that.
