I have a 2001 S10 that after reving the engine, the idle goes up to 3500 to 4000 rpms and wont go down. I checked the obvious throttle cables and they didn't seem to be stuck. What other checks should I do my self before I drop a fortune at the shop.

You could check the Idle Air Control soleniod for carbon deposits and clean them off, and check for vacuum leaks for a start.
