I'm trying to replace a timing chain on a 2.2 liter engine. My problem is I can't seem to get the cooling fan and clutch assy off. I removed the belt and 4 bolts on the pulley. The pulley is loose but the fan is not. It seems to be attached by a 1.5 inch wide hex nut that spins on a bearing. Any sugestiions? Also I need to know if a 2.2 liter s10 engine is a interferance engine. I'm wondering if I might have bent valves because the chain is broken.

You will need a special service tool (SST) for this repair.

First, remove the upper fan shroud. Then remove the fan clutch assembly in a counterclockwise direction using a fan clutch wrench (this is the SST). Remove the fan clutch assembly from the vehicle.
Remove the fan blade mounting bolts.
Remove the fan blade from the fan clutch.

I believe the '97 and up models are non-interference engines. A quick call to local Chevy dealer can confirm this.
