I work as a vehicle inspector at an auto auction.
I encountered a part on an S10 truck today that I have never seen before.
This part is cable actuated from inside the cab.
It almost looks like the shifting mechanism on a manual transmission, and my best guess is that it is designed to disconnect the driveshaft from inside of the cab. Part is bolted to the front of the differential.
So, what do you think?

That is not factory installed.
But it's a neat idea.

It does what you thought it did. It disconnects the drive shaft from the axle, for towing. Like a car being pulled behind an RV.
It looks like a Remco brand.

I can't say why someone would go through the trouble to put it on a truck with a manual transmission.
