I replaced a working fuel pump because it was not showing the correct amount of fuel in the tank. When I turned the key to check the new pump before I set the bed of the truck back in place it wouldn't come on. I checked the GREY wire and it is getting power. I exchange the fuel pump just to be safe and the new one does not work either. I then plugged the old pump that I know works and still got nothing. I then took the BLACK ground wire and grounded it to the frame to test it and the pump came on when I turned the key on.

Will grounding the black wire to the frame cause a fire hazard and what could I be missing?
