A repair manual directs me to set No. 1 to TDC and drop in the distributor pointed to the cast-in No. 6. I have tried this, moved one ahead and one behind (Three times). Wants to buck and kick, backfire, especially on the initiial setting. Does not seem to fire as much on the other settings. I have verified compression stroke on No. 1, intake opening, then compression. Vehicle ran before Head job wioth no ignition probs. Kinda stuck on this one. Book says it should not work if out of distributor time because PCM will cancel/alarm firing code if distributor is out. Have not seen this. There are two marks on Harmonic balancer. I was told to go with the first one and have. Am I missing something here? Please help! Thank you in advance.

Sounds like you are 180 degrees out. You are using the installation procedure 2 in the manual below.

However, I am thinking you are missing the first part of the process.

So, I am attaching the entire procedure for replacing the distributor. This includes two processes for installation.

If this checks out, then we are going to need to run a compression check because if you just had the head rebuilt then we could have a valve issue or even a head gasket issue.

Here is a guide that tells how to do that:

Please review this material and let us know what happens.

Thanks
