Sir,

Have a 98 s10 pickup, has been hard starting.
It was tuned up one year ago and just had
vgr valve replaced.

A parts dealer told me to check out fuel
system, and I replaced the fuel filter
ran Johnson's gas treatment for clogged
injectors a couple of tank fulls and it
runs better.

He also told me to check for noise
when I turned the key to hear if
the fuel pump engaged.
It seems like it comes on the second
time you turn the key and starts right
up. If you don't turn the key once,
then it still starts but turnes over for
about five seconds or so, which is
not normal for it.

I been trying to research the problem
and I heard sometimes the relay goes
bad, and as far as I know the relay
has never been replaced. Is it hooked
up to the oil pressure gauge, because
I have noticed on occasion I get
erradic readings on the oil pressure
even though the oil is full and there
is no problem. No leaks, no loss of
oil, etc. The engine is old so the
compression is not the greatest.
The gauge is probably too old
is my guess could be electronic.

I am a one owner, and had the
truck since new and religiously
changed the oil and did maintenance.

Do I need a new fuel pump?
or what, any clue.

Hello what you describe could be a couple of things. You said if you turn the key once and then start it it seems ok, that sounds like the fuel system is loosing its prime which could be the check valve in the pump which would require pump replacement or the other end of the line which is the fuel pressure regulator leaking down. Hope this helps if not write back and we can put our heads together.
