1998 Chevy S-10 Front Wheel Drive Automatic

will a 1995 chevy s10 motor work with a 1998 chevy s10? is it EFI compatible? my husband bought his truck and it slung a rod and the mechanic told us it would just be easier to buy a new motor, but that's the only year (1995) motor we could find.
