1997 Chevy S-10 full gauge never shows how much in tank

i can fill up the tank and run for miles and miles and the gauge hardly ever moves. i use my trip mileage to indicate to me when i am getting to a low point.

The tank sender unit has failed, your mechanic can do a quick test to prove this is so.
