When it started to get cold outside my transmission would slip until the truck heated up. Now my truck is in 3000-4000 RPM and going 25 mph when I floor it. Then I would park it and try to drive it but it wouldn't move. 3 hours later I put it in reverse and it backed up a little ways and has a high RPM sound in park. What is the problem? Do I need a new transmission?

Check the fluid level. Make sure the transmission is full. Also, smell the fluid for a burnt odor--you'll know if you smell it. Also, wipe the dipstick off with a white tissue or white rag. Observe the color of the fluid. It should be red. If it is brown-black or tan then the fluid is burnt. You can try changing the fluid and putting in a new trans. Filter, but if, when you drain the fluid, there is excessive debris in the fluid you may need a rebuild. Try changing the fluid first. Now there will be some debris in the fluid, but if there is alot then a rebuild may be in order. Let me know how you make out.
