Electrical problem
1991 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 140k miles

Went to hook up an old battery that I had on a trickle charge for the past week. Connected + cable, then I connected the - cable. The +cable that leads from the battery to the alternator started smoking and glowing red. I quickly disconnected the battery, but the damage was done. What did I do wrong? I did not accidentally switch the cables, as they don't reach the terminals

If you didn't reverse polarity-you probably have a short somewhere start at the starter solenoid
