1986 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 160000 miles

When i turn my steering wheel to the right, my truck dies on me, or will backfire. Any ideas?? Your help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

if you bring the rpm's up to 1500 and turn the wheel does it still die and backfire on you?
