Engine Performance problem
1983 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Sometimes the engine starts and runs at normal high idle and backs off like it should. But other times it takes alot of cranking then when it finally starts it stalls and runs very rough and I have to pump the gas peddle to keep it running. After it warms up it runs better. The carb. has black cover where the choke coil is and is turned all the way to the left.
Have completed full tune up and replaced all faulty vacume hoses. When driving engine also surges between 40 and 60 mph. Please help my hair is getting greyer. Thanks......
