Wanting to by a 97 either Geo or Chevy tracker. 79k miles and in Excellent shape. Owner states that while traveling down road, white smoke came out of tailpipe, car ran rough and it overheated. He pulled over after about a mile then had it towed.

He said he thought that the timimg belt broke but I pulled back cover to see that the belt was in tact. How can I tell what is wrong? Or, how can I tell that the head gasket is blown, remove sparkplugs?

Check the oil see if there is water in the oil on the dipstick if there is then the headgasket is blown. If there's no water put it under a pressure test and see if the water in the rad leaks or if it just disapears. If so then the headgasket is blown. If the timing belt is in tact check to see if its stretched. Or the temperture sensor could be blown. The white smoke usally means the headgasket is gone but not always. It couldve just had a lot of carbon build up
