the key will not turn

chevy impala 2004 58k
my car had done some thing that i just don't understand the key won't turn and the wheel won't lock. it did this once before for about 2-3 days then one day i came to try it an i started up. but now its been about 3 weeks an i just don't get it

There is a switch on the brake assembly in the car under the dash. This is either out of alignment or has failed. Fixing this should restore them both. First, though just to be thorough, check the fuses under the dash AND under the hood.
