1998 Chev. Tracker, 79,000 miles, auto. trans., took to mechanic to have gaskets and seals replaced. drove home only 5 miles, went a couple days later to start and wouldn't start, made a bad knocking sound. was towed back to mechanic, we were told that the engine rings collapsed.

Are you sure they didn't say collapsed lifters? Rings don't collapse they wear or break...

It sounds like to me, the mechanic allowed the old gasket material or the gasket gun grit get down into the engine and now it has spun a bearing and clogged the oil pump pick up.
